Welcome to one of the world's most unique wine competitions the 2009 International Chardonnay Challenge.
It is an event that celebrates a single variety the not-so-modest chardonnay. From small beginnings in 1999 when there were less than 100 entries, to recent years when more than 500 wines come in from all over the world. Our judges are also international and usually as celebrated as the wines they are critiquing.

Rob Godwin, General Manager GisVin Limited presents to Champion Wine of the Show, Coldstream Hills Reserve Chardonnay 2007 Simon Gardiner, Australian Brands Manager Foster's Group.
To ensure the best possible results, our judges taste no more than 100 wines a day each, keeping their palates fresh and open. We are perhaps the only competition in the world that works closely with wine students students from Tairawhiti Polytechnic's wine course, who steward for the event, exposing them to an element of wine many would not have the opportunity to do. We welcome you to become a part of this fantastic event. We have a data base second to none that includes media, wine companies, wine makers and all sorts of industry contacts from all over the world and we never miss an opportunity to tell them about the ICC.
TRULY UNIQUE
The ICC is more than just a competition it is a celebration of a single variety that has the adoration of so many.
From winemakers who celebrate the versatility of chardonnay to wine aficionados who toast both the traditional and new trends, through to the many who appreciate it for everything it offers.
It's not without good reason that chardonnay continues to be one of the most popular varieties in the world. It is the most popular wine in the United States and the most widely planted in Australia, with revered status in several countries. It's had its ups and downs, but always there are a loyal band of upporters who love chardonnay. And now, with probably more varieties than ever available for consumers all over the world, chardonnay is once again gathering momentum. Perhaps it is winemakers producing an even wider array of styles, but more likely it is because this is a variety that will always feature at the top of the pyramid.
It is with pride that New Zealand Winegrowers is aligned as a Strategic Partner with the International Chardonnay Challenge. This is a truly unique competition that celebrates one of the world's most favourite varieties in a region that is recognised widely for its chardonnay. ICC is the perfect platform for the continuing rise of New Zealand's wines in the worldwide marketplace.
Chardonnay retains a strong position worldwide with a fabulous collection of styles that underlines the variety as still being one extremely versatile grape.
